Friday 20th September 2024
Monday September 30th will be the first Monday Underground Summer Series event of the season .
Many people don't know this has been a staple fun run and walk on Northcote Point for a long time. Established in 1999, this makes it the 25th anniversary year of the event! It has been run by various individuals and groups over the years and Monday Underground is privileged to be the current custodians of the event.
With the explosion of the jogging culture in Auckland, the past few seasons has seen the event's popularity grow massively with over 200 entrants showing up some Mondays. This has naturally meant some changes have needed to be made to the way the event operates, and more changes are planned for this season to ensure the health and safety of entrants and hopefully, a smoother experience for everyone on the night. Event details as follows:
Day:
Every Monday from 30 September 2024 until 31 March 2025 (unless the Tavern is shut, but I think we'll get through this season with no public holiday clashes).
Time:
We'll set off in three waves to spread the numbers out, as follows:
Wave 1 - 6.10pm - Walkers
Wave 2 - 6.20pm - Intermediate wave for fast walkers / joggers
Wave 3 - 6.30pm - Runners
We aim to get away at exactly these times so please be ready at the start line ahead of the noted times.
Good to get everyone back at the Tavern by around 7pm so you can grab a beer and be ready for prize-giving at circa 7.15pm.
Start line:
Behind the Northcote Tavern on Princes Street.
The Course:
Hard to easily describe! If new to the event, best to follow someone else and generally needs to be run 3 or 4 times before you become comfortable with it. Head to the following page on our website and scroll down to 'Summer Course' for the turn-by-turn description:
https://www.mondayunderground.com/the-course
Timing:
We typically have a timing assistant at the start/finish line giving your time as you cross the line (Subtract 10 mins if you leave in Wave 2 or 20 mins if in Wave 3). This will be subject to availability this season so please be prepared to time yourself if needed, which most people do anyway.
Cost:
This year we're offering season entries. One price, paid upfront, gets you into all 27 events and spot prize draws.
Season entry charges will be as follows:
$75 - Adult
$50 - Child/student/seniors
$225 - Family of four (+$25 for each extra child)
Bank account details: 03-1399-0676583-001 Please use your name as reference.
Casual entry charges will be as follows:
$4 - Adult
$3 - Child/student/seniors
$10 - Family of four (+$2 for each extra child)
Entry fees pay for spot prizes so please, please, please ensure you're all paid up each week!
With the increasing cost of spot prizes we've had to increase entry fees this year unfortunately, noting these had remained unchanged since inception in 1999!
Health and Safety:
We're very conscious of Health and Safety at Monday Underground and the summer event involves open roads, road crossings, impatient motorists, hills, steps, large numbers, young children and dogs. We will ask you to please sign-in with a QR Code which includes a Health and Safety waiver, and please manage yourself, your children and your dogs appropriately out on the course. Thank you
Thanks:
Thanks to the team who put their time and effort into this event including Chrissie, Loes, Megan, Helen, Mackenzie, Courtney, Bevan, Eoin, Steve, Henry, Julian, Werner, Garth, Ange and the Northcote Tavern crew and the Northcote Point Bistro crew.
Cheers everyone, think it's going to be a big season. Looking forward to having you along!

Morning!
Thanks for popping along last night - new season record of 182 people taking advantage of a gorgeous evening.
Results
Good to see a few new names on the podium last night. Congrats to Nicole Antonelli, Natasha Gordon, Emerald James, Andrew McCulley, Damon Nicholas and Luke Lopes.
Prize-giving
Thanks to James Wrighton and Eoin O'Callaghan for the help at prize-giving last night. Apparently Jimmy was frustrated watching me flick through all the sheets of paper to find the next prize winner so came up with the ingenious solution of using assistants. They boys did OK, but we might keep them on their toes and trial a couple of others next week .
Queenstown and Kerikeri
Good luck to everyone competing in the Kerikeri Half Marathon and Queenstown Marathon/Half Marathon/10km events on this weekend.
Sophie
Bye to Sophie Hogan. Off to Christchurch to start a new job. Have fun down there but come back and visit soon!
Rebecca
Happy birthday for last night Rebecca Philipson!. Glad we could jack-up a spot-prize for the special day.
Social media
As always, check out / follow us on the socials for photos, updates, announcements etc. There's heaps of pics from last night up on Insta already. Thanks to Eoin and Loes for capturing the evening.

Evening all,
A bit later getting this out today sorry!
Massive thanks to EVERYONE who came along to the Northcote Tavern last night to enjoy a run and a couple of beers. We had 169 in total, including 47 first-timers this season. Not surprising with the public holiday, as those who can't normally make it took the opportunity to pop along.
Special thanks to:
445 Run Club, cheers Travis for bringing a good crew across.
Owairaka Athletics, including Keith, James P, Mitch and James C (although technically James C we count you as one of us).
Y Run Club, including Joanne and Tracey.
Dan Bidois, MP-Elect for Northcote. Busy times so thanks for coming and sorry to intrude on date night! Hope to see you again soon.
Suzanne Jeffels and partner for coming all the way from Clevedon to run with us.
Charlotte Lynch for coming along on your special 10th birthday.
Eoin for prize donations, Health and Safety and general enthusiasm.
Chrissie, Megan, Werner, Garth, Loes and Ange for on-the-day organisation.
Results
OK, I admit I'm not perfect and I stuffed up a bit last night. We had records falling everywhere last night and apologies for not giving recognition to the right people on the night. Turns out we had an all-time mens' course record last night and, if the timing sheets are correct, a dead-heat at that! Isaac Gordon and Tim Pearce taking out the men's field in 18.13 with Mitch Carlyle (https://www.instagram.com/everydayrunnermitch/) in the slipstream and bringing it home third in 18.17. For the women Rosie Taylor recorded a season-best time for the women's course of 22.52 with Jodie Bakewell-White and Ayawa Sotome taking 2nd and 3rd.
Halloween
Next week we run October 30th, the day before Halloween, so let's get in the mood early and dress up for the occasion! Prize for the best costume we see out there on the course!
School's out FOREVER!
Next week marks the official last week of school FOREVER for some of our fave Northcote College Year 13s that run with us regularly.
To mark the occasion, and show us their Prefect skills, Jack Clendon and Katie West will be taking over from me and running the weekly chat/speech and spot prize draw.
Hopefully they bring their regular band of mates Ashok, Jack, Zara etc and I think in lieu of Halloween dress-up, Blazers and ties for this lot!
Movember
Monday Underground is supporting Movember this year, supporting Men's Health. There's a big event coming up on 25th November "[mo]re than a run" and we encourage you to join our Monday Underground team and come along to that.

Monday 23rd October 2023
Hi all,
A reminder we will be running as usual tonight for Labour Day at the following times:
- 6.10 pm for Walkers (a reminder this is the new start time to give a bit more better between walkers and runners)
- 6.30 pm for Runners (as per normal)
A couple of notices / reminders before tonight:
Entry donations
PLEASE remember to drop your gold coin donation in the bucket at registration. These donations pay for the spot prizes and we'd like to keep our ratio of 1 spot prize per 10 entries each week.
It is largely an honesty-based system so if you don't have a gold coin on you one week, please top us up the next week you're there. Also, if you don't have spare change lying around feel free to drop us a note for a multiple week entry.
Sign-in
We'll try and set up in the garden bar as usual but given it's Labour Day the pub could be busy with other patrons. If we're not there we might be out in the large garden area or by the Fishing Club's garage. Hunt us down, we'll be there somewhere.
Numbers
Given it's a public holiday it could be busier than usual tonight (or it might not be ... who knows!). Please be patient signing in and arrive well before your event start time to put your name down and drop your donation. Also please try and hurry through the time registration process at the end so we can get to spot prizes as quick as we can. Remember, if your name is already on the sheet you are in the spot-prize draw so you can always see us after prize-giving to record your time or even email us after the event.
Health and Safety
As always we encourage you to look after yourselves out on the run. Roads are open and we are getting big numbers so please:
- use footpaths where possible
- use pedestrian crossings to cross the roads where possible
- ALWAYS be aware of and give way to traffic when otherwise crossing the roads
- Adults be aware of your young kids whereabouts at all times on the course
Merchandise
Also, per last week's email merchandise orders are open now on our website. These close off in a bit over a week, October 31st, so head to the following link and get ordering:
https://www.mondayunderground.com/merchandise
Look forward to seeing you all tonight.
Cheers

Thursday 19th October 2023
Hi all,
Due to a constant pipeline of demand we're opening the order books again for our world-famous Run/Monday Underground merchandise.
There's a short timeframe - orders close Oct 31st - as we want to get these produced, landed and distributed by early December.
The ordering system is a bit different this time. We're running it through the website www.mondayunderground.com. Go to the website, click on 'Merchandise' in the menu then follow the instructions to order. Your order will be confirmed once the money is deposited in the nominated bank account.
Please note the bank account number is different than last time you ordered as this process is now being entirely run/administered by Henry. The bank account is 12-3035-0007468-51.
Pricing for the items is as follows:
$75 for Hoodies
$45 for Running shirts and singlets
$35 for Casual Ts
Sizing charts and images of the merch is on the website.
If you have any issues with ordering online please reply to this email with your order.
Don't muck around - get those orders in quick!!

Tuesday 17 October 2023
Morning all,
Another great night last night with a warm (not wet, not windy!) evening in the garden bar ... which was packed to over-flowing with our 174 walk/run entrants.
The trajectory of numbers we are getting along for this event is quite staggering. As you can see on the chart below, we are already closing in on our all time record of 197 entrants which we achieved at the massive finale prize-fest event at the end of last season. Queues were a bit more manageable last night with the walkers new start time of 6.10pm and the extremely low-tech 3-clipboard system helping get the numbers through a bit quicker. We're making progress on a better QR-code based sign-in system too which we might trial within the next week or two.
Health and safety
With the growth in numbers comes health and safety concerns. Obviously the roads are all open to traffic and there are a few road crossings within the run course. PLEASE, be careful when out and about and consider the following:
- use footpaths where possible
- use pedestrian crossings to cross the roads where possible
- ALWAYS be aware of and give way to traffic when otherwise crossing the roads
- Adults be aware of your young kids whereabouts at all times on the course
We'll be doing a bit more of a push on the Health and Safety front in coming weeks.
Results
Another tight contest in the women's field last night with Rosie Taylor taking it out for the third time this season in 23.19 with JBW 5 seconds adrift and a further 21 back to Emerald James. For the men, Isaac Gordon (again - is he beatable this season?!), Sean Kelly and Luke Lopes making up the podium. Results below and as usual in full in attached PDF:
Merchandise
We'll also be opening up another round of merchandise orders due to popular demand. We'll have a new 2023-24 summer singlet available, as well as the full range of running Ts, casual Ts and hoodies.
There will be a short-timeframe for orders (these will close Oct- 31st) as Steve Kilgallon has negotiated a quick turnaround from Dynasty Sports so we can get these landed and distributed to everyone pre-Christmas. A separate email will come out on this within the next 48 hours.
That's it from me this week. See you all next Monday.
Cheers
Dave
